Westmoreland County Community College – New Education Center
Westmoreland County Community College acquired a parcel of land following the demolition of several existing dilapidated buildings situated adjacent to a railroad track. L.R. Kimball was tasked with designing a state-of-the-art facility and creating a “new front door” for the college.
The 29,000 SF Education Center houses classrooms, computer labs, student support spaces, and administrative offices that employ the latest technology in data, communications, and security. The building design revitalizes the challenging urban site by introducing pedestrian walkways, exterior plazas, lawns, and plantings which define the edges of the campus along the busy streets.
The project features a “SCALE-UP” classroom. SCALE-UP stands for Student-Centered Active Learning Environment for Undergraduate Programs. All aspects of the room are intentionally part of the “technology” for teaching and learning in a flexible, connected, collaborative, multisensory and graphic manner.
