Artificial Turf Replacement UPMC Sports Performance Complex, Pittsburgh, PA
The Indoor Practice Facility at the UPMC Sports Performance Complex located in Pittsburgh’s Southside is utilized by both the Pittsburgh Steelers and the University of Pittsburgh for football practice. An artificial turf playing surface was installed in the facility during original construction and functioned well for a decade, but was in need of replacement.
With an extremely aggressive time frame due to spring practice deadlines, demolition of the existing turf and installation of the new turf system needed to occur within a five-week window follow the fall football season. L.R. Kimball was commissioned to develop the plans and specifications for the replacement of the artificial turf system and successfully met the schedule. Construction began at the end of January and was completed in early March.
The artificial turf system installed is the UBU Speed Series M6_M monofilament turf system with rubber and sand infill. Full color inlays of the logos for both the Steelers and Pitt are provided in the end zones as well as inlays for numbers and field markings that conform to both NFL and NCAA regulations.
