Kimball
was named a national finalist in the 2008 American Council of
Engineering Companies’ (ACEC) National Engineering Excellence Award
program for the Bedford Springs Transportation Improvement Project
in Bedford, PA. The project was recognized as a finalist in the
environmental category.Kimball is being
honored nationally for their work on the Bedford Springs
Transportation Improvement project. The American Council of
Engineering Companies (ACEC) has awarded Kimball their 2008 National
Enginee ring Excellence Award for the relocation of Business Route
220 and restructuring of Shober’s Run retaining wall just south of
Bedford
The
project, for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT)
Engineering District 9-0, involved complex historical preservation
and environmental challenges, including compliance issues with its
National Register Historic District/National Historic Landmark
designation, preservation of high-quality trout waters, and its
location in a 100 year-old floodplain.

transportation engineers relocated
moved Business Route 220 out of the floodplain and placed it
behind and to the west of the Bedford Springs Hotel, taking
through-traffic away from the front of the property and eliminating
dangerous curves providing for safer
driving conditions. With this project, Kimball became the
first company in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to complete the
Federal Section 4(f) project evaluations that are necessary when
working on a federal transportation project in a national historic
district.
The
Bedford Springs Transportation Project is considered a key element
in the restoration of the Bedford Springs Hotel complex and vital to
the economic growth of Bedford County.
