Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Reconstruct/Overlay Runway 4-22
This was a multi-phased runway reconstruction/overlay project at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport. A new Kimball client, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International contracted with the firm to complete the design, bidding, and construction phase services for the reconstruction/overlay of Runway 4-22, which is 7.501 ft. x 150 ft. and serves as the main instrument landing system runway. The main runway showed major cracking, segregation, and overall pavement failure. Once the damage was assessed it appeared as though there would be more than 6 million dollars worth of work required to get Runway 4-22 up to the required standards. Challenges presented included maintaining a busy flight schedule and working with a limited contract schedule.
The project included a three-inch mill and pavement overlay with rehabilitation of the asphalt pavement by completing crack sealing and full-depth pavement repair. Crews worked 24/7 on some of the phases with one 24-hour span of continuous paving at the runway intersection. This was the only day the airport was entirely closed. An additional temporary air traffic control tower was provided by the FAA for use during construction. Additional work included upgrading some of the runway edge lighting, new runway pavement markings, and new pavement grooving.
With the coordination efforts between the airport staff, Slusser Brothers Contracting, and Kimball team, the project was completed under budget, under the scheduled contract time and was worthy of the National Asphalt Pavement Associations Quality In Construction Award. The airport now has a main runway with exceptional ride-ability that should last for several years.
