Airfield and Heliport Design

 

 

Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base (NASJRB)
PA Department of Military and Veterans Affairs
Willow Grove, PA

L.R. Kimball prepared the implementation plan and associated reports for the transformation of NASJRB Willow Grove from a U.S. Navy installation to a proposed Joint Interagency Installation operated under a lease/license arrangement between the U.S. Air Force and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

 

911th Airlift Wing Pittsburgh International Airport Air Reserve Station

L.R. Kimball was awarded an Indefinite Delivery / Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract to provide architectural, engineering and consulting services to the Pittsburgh International Airport Air Reserve Station. Projects under the contract have included:

  • Full exterior renovations and an addition to an existing one-story, 6,000-square-foot communications facility, doubling its existing size
  • Repair and replace portions of the existing aircraft petroleum oil lubricants paving and add a new sliding gate and entry pedestal to limit access to the area
  • Full renovation and repairs to two 28+ unit visitor’s quarter dormitory units, including roof and exterior skin replacement
  • Full interior renovations to the club kitchen and support spaces, including equipment selection and design
  • Full interior renovations and rooftop HVAC replacement at the flight operations building
 

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Heliport and Access Taxiway
Quantico, VA

L.R. Kimball prepared schematic design drawings for the new heliport and access taxiway for the FBI at the Marine Corps Base, Quantico, VA. Work included heliport siting design, an FAA obstruction analysis and related obstruction mitigation plan.

 

National Naval Medical Center
Bethesda, MD

L.R. Kimball prepared a report to assess the current condition of the existing helipad and to determine the necessary actions to bring it into compliance with Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) Design Criteria. The report outlines the current conditions of the helipad and makes recommendations to bring the following items into compliance with the UFC: 
  • Pavement condition 
  • Lighting system and navigational aids
  • Flight path clearances 
  • Vehicular access and parking 
  • Utilities 
  • Security 
  • Accessibility to helicopter traffic 
  • Ability to handle existing traffic

Achieving interoperable communications requires more than just updated hardware and technology

In recent weeks, a number of public safety groups have debated how far public safety radio interoperability has come since 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina.
